then Ibn Kathir (4/500) cited a supporting mursal report from Qatadah stating that, when the Prophet ﷺ recited it, he would say: “Subhan rabbi al-a‘la” (Glorified be my Lord, the Most High).
Al-Bayhaqi transmitted the same wording with two separate chains from ‘Ali and from Abu Musa; the isnad to ‘Ali is hasan, while that to Abu Musa is sahih. Al-Hakim (2/521) likewise reported it from Ibn ‘Umar, remarking that it is “sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” a judgment with which al-Dhahabi agreed; the assessment is accurate.
I subsequently noticed that al-Hakim also recorded the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (2/510) through the route of Yazid b. ‘Iyad – Isma‘il b. Umayyah – Abu al-Yasa‘ – Abu Hurayrah: whenever the Prophet ﷺ recited, “a-laysa dhalika bi-qadirin ‘ala an yuhyiya al-mawta” (Is not that [Allah] able to give life to the dead? Q 75:40), he would say, “Yes,” and when he recited, “a-laysa Allahu bi-ahkama al-hakimin” (Is not Allah the wisest of judges? Q 95:8), he would say, “Yes.” Al-Hakim declared the chain sahih, and al-Dhahabi concurred.
I (the author) have found no biographical notice for this Abu al-Yasa‘; most likely he is the Bedouin mentioned in the first chain—and Allah knows best.
The hadith is unrestricted, applying to recitation both inside and outside the prayer, whether the prayer is voluntary or obligatory. Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/132/2) reports that Abu Musa al-Ash‘ari and al-Mughira would say it in the obligatory prayer, and he relates it from ‘Umar and ‘Ali without qualification.
