(2) Yet Abu Dawud classed it as defective, observing: “Waki‘ has been contradicted in this report; for Abu Waki‘ and Shu‘ba transmitted it from Abu Ishaq, from Saʿid ibn ʿUbayd, from Ibn ʿAbbas only as a mawquf statement (stopping with the Companion). I reply: Wakiʿ ibn al-Jarrah is a trustworthy ḥafiẓ, as Ibn Hajar notes in Taqrib al-Tahdhib, and he is the one who transmitted it in the marfuʿ (Prophetic) form—an additional wording that must be accepted. It is further corroborated by the hadith of Ismaʿil ibn ʿUlayya, who said: “I heard a bedouin say: I heard Abu Hurayra relate that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Whoever among you recites wa’l-tini wa’z-zaytun (95:1) and, on reaching its end—alaysa Allahu bi-ahkami’l-hakimin (Is not Allah the best of judges? – 95:8)—should say: bala, wa ana ʿala dhalika mina’sh-shahidin (Indeed, yes, and I am among those who testify to it). Whoever recites la uqsimu bi-yawm al-qiyama (75:1) and reaches alaysa dhalika bi-qadirin ʿala an yuhyiya’l-mawta (Is not He able to resurrect the dead? – 75:40) should say: bala. And whoever recites wa’l-mursalat (77:1) and arrives at fa-bi ayyi ḥadithin baʿdahu yuʾminun (In what discourse after it will they believe? – 77:50) should say: amanna billah (We believe in Allah).’” Ismaʿil added: “I began repeating it back to the bedouin, testing him, whereupon he exclaimed, ‘Nephew, do you think I have not memorised it? I have performed the pilgrimage sixty times, and for each one I still recall the very camel on which I travelled.’” Abu Dawud recorded the hadith (1/141–142); al-Bayhaqi cited it from him (2/310–311); and Ahmad transmitted it (2/249), all of them through Sufyan ibn ʿUyayna from Ismaʿil with these words. Tirmidhi (2/238) narrated part of it and remarked: “This narration is only known through this chain, from this bedouin on the authority of Abu Hurayra, and his name is not given.” Hafiz Ibn Kathir (4/452) adds: “Shuʿba also reported it from Ismaʿil ibn Umayya, who, when asked ‘Who told it to you?’ replied, ‘A truthful man,’—from Abu Hurayra.”
