(2 – continued) “…al-qunut,” that is, the standing posture.
Al-Tahawi (1/176) records the report through the same chain with precisely the wording cited in the main text.
Ibn Majah (1/434) likewise transmits it through that route with the wording:
Someone asked the Prophet ﷺ, “Which prayer is best?” He replied, “Lengthy qunut (i.e., prolonged standing).”
The same wording is found in al-Tirmidhi (2/329) and Ahmad (3/391) through several isnads that go back to Abu al-Zubayr. Abu al-Zubayr, however, was a mudallis and here relates the hadith by mere an‘anah, so the chain is formally weak.
Yet he is supported by a follow-up (mutabi‘): Muslim, al-Tahawi, al-Tayalisi (no. 276), and Ahmad (3/302, 314) transmit it via al-A‘mash → Abu Sufyan → Jabir, which reinforces the report.
Further corroborating narrations (shawahid) exist:
1. The hadith of Abdullah ibn Hubshi al-Khath‘ami, reported by al-Nasai (1/349), al-Darimi (1/331), al-Tahawi, and Ahmad (3/411–412); through Ahmad it is also found in Abu Dawud (1/228–229) and Ibn Nasr (no. 51). All trace the isnad as: Ibn Jurayj → Uthman ibn Abi Sulayman → Ali al-Azdi → Ubayd ibn Umayr → Abdullah ibn Hubshi. Al-Darimi records the wording “standing (al-qiyam),” as does Ibn Nasr. This chain is sound according to Muslim’s criterion.
2. A report from Amr ibn Abasa preserved by Ahmad (4/385).
Al-Sindi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
