(continuing) The hadith offers several points of benefit: it shows that one may lengthen the final rakah beyond those that precede it, and it strengthens the earlier view of Qadi Abu Bakr that the arrangement of the surahs was left to the companions’ own ijtihad, for the sequence followed by the aforesaid Abdullah differs from that of the Uthmanic mushaf.
(1) The first figure designates the surah’s number, the second its total verses. From this numbering we see that, in pairing many of these matching surahs, the Prophet did not follow the mushaf order, which proves that doing so is permissible; the same point will recur in the section “Recitation in the Night Prayer,” even though observing the canonical order remains preferable.
(2) This report is from Ibn Masud. It is related by al-Bukhari 2/205–206; Muslim 2/205; al-Nasai 1/156; al-Tahawi 1/204; al-Bayhaqi 2/60; al-Tayalisi 35; and Ahmad 1/436, all through Shubah, from Amr ibn Murrah, who heard it from Abu Wail.
