Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

At times he would divide it between two rakʿahs (*). At other times he would recite it in full again during the second rakʿah (1). And on occasion he would combine two surahs—or even more—within a single rakʿah (2).

reciting in this way—linking one surah to the next—is more meritorious in the sight of Allah. If we do not adopt the interpretation we have chosen and instead return to the first meaning, this statement of the Prophet ﷺ would conflict with the hadith under discussion. Legal theory requires that two sound reports be harmonised whenever possible, and such harmony is attainable only through the reading we have proposed. Allah knows best. (*) The Shaykh inserted a private reminder here: “See al-Majmaʿ, 2/274.” He also documented the narration in the printed edition of Sifat al-Salat, saying: “[Narrated by] Ahmad and Abu Yaʿla through two chains. See ‘Recitation in Salat al-Fajr,’ p. 430.” (1) “Just as he did in the dawn prayer; the discussion will appear shortly (p. 435).” (2) A fuller clarification and documentation will follow. Abu ʿUbayd said: “The common practice is that combining surahs within one rakʿah is good and not disliked; it is what ʿUthman ibn ʿAffan, Tamim al-Dari and others did, and it surpasses every other form of combination. Nevertheless, the view I prefer is not to complete the Quran in less than three nights, because of the reports from the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions discouraging that.” Ibn Nasr recorded this in Qiyam al-Layl (p. 62). Al-Hafiz (2/204) added: “Al-Bayhaqi transmitted from al-Shafiʿi, in Manaqib al-Shafiʿi, that combining surahs is recommended.” Ahmad (2/13; 5/66), al-Bayhaqi (2/60) and al-Tahawi (1/205) all relate from Nafiʿ: “Ibn ʿUmar would sometimes lead us in the obligatory prayer with two, even three, surahs.”
