Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and he would begin at the very opening of the surah and, in most instances, recite it through to the end (1). He would also say:

in the Fajr prayer by unanimous agreement, and—according to the differing views—also in other prayers, so as to help the people catch the rakʿah; for that time is one of sleep and heedlessness, as the Companions understood from the Prophet’s practice. Al-Halbah cites ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Mubarak, Ishaq, Ibrahim, and al-Thawri as saying that it is recommended for the imam to repeat the tasbih five times in rukuʿ, so that those behind him who arrive late can still say it three times. On this basis, if the imam purposely elongates the bow to assist the late-comer, that is preferable—provided no thought of currying favor, embarrassment, or the like crosses his mind. For this reason al-Miʿraj, quoting al-Jamiʿ, states: “There is no harm; rather, he is rewarded, for Allah says: ‘Cooperate in righteousness and piety’ (Q 5:2).” Ibn ʿAbidin then adds: “Al-Tahawi said: Among the acts of drawing near to Allah is the imam’s lengthening of the rukuʿ so that a person who joins while the imam is still bowing actually attains the rakʿah; otherwise—if the imam were to raise his head first—the late-comer, as often happens with untrained worshippers, would assume he had caught the rakʿah and would give the final salam with the imam, while the imam would have no opportunity to tell him to repeat or complete his prayer.” (1) Numerous hadiths that will be cited later support this point. Al-Zayn ibn al-Munir said: “Malik held that the worshipper should recite a full surah in every rakʿah, following Ibn ʿUmar’s statement that every surah has its share of bowing and prostration. One should therefore neither divide a surah between two rakʿahs nor recite only part of it and leave the rest. If he does so, his prayer is still valid, but it is contrary to what is preferable.” He mentioned this in Fath (2/204) and added: “This is also the position of al-Shafiʿi.” Ibn al-Munir continued: “What appears to me is that repeating the same surah in both rakʿahs is lighter than splitting one surah between them.” The dislike stems from the thematic unity of a surah: wherever one stops short, it is not like reaching its end. If the stop occurs at a non-complete pause, the dislike is obvious; even if at a complete pause, it is still clearly contrary to what is preferable. Earlier, under the chapter of Purification, we cited the story of the Ansari whom the enemy struck with an arrow, yet he did not break his prayer and said
