“…I have never prayed behind an imam whose prayer was lighter than that of the Messenger of Allah, yet none more complete. When the Messenger of Allah would hear the cry of a child he would shorten the prayer, fearing that its mother might be distressed.” Its chain also satisfies the conditions of both Sahih collections. A corroborating narration comes from Abu Hurayrah. Ahmad (2/432) transmits it through Ibn Ajalān, who said: “I heard my father relate from Abu Hurayrah that the Prophet heard the voice of a child while praying, so he shortened the prayer.” Its chain is hasan. (1) The same hadith is reported from Anas as well. Al-Bukhari (2/161), Muslim (2/44), Ibn Majah (1/312), al-Bayhaqi (2/393), and Ahmad (3/109) record it through several routes from Saʿid ibn Abi ʿArubah, from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik. It has additional supporting narrations, among them the report of al-Awzaʿi from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Qatadah, from his father, which is identical except for the wording: “out of dislike that I burden his mother.” Al-Bukhari (2/160), Abu Dawud (1/126), al-Nasaʾi (1/132), Ibn Majah as well, and Ahmad (5/305) all transmit it through this chain.
