His ﷺ Recitation after al-Fatiha
After al-Fatiha he ﷺ would recite another surah. At times he prolonged the recitation, while on other occasions he shortened it because of travel, a cough, illness, or the cry of a child whose mother was praying behind him ﷺ. Anas ibn Malik—may Allah be pleased with him—relates:
“One day the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hurried (1) through the Fajr prayer—in another report: he led the morning prayer and recited the two shortest surahs in the Quran. People asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, why did you shorten it?’ He replied, ‘I heard a child crying (2) and assumed his mother was praying among us, so I wanted to free her to attend to him.’” (3)
(1) That is, he shortened it.
(2) This hadith and others like it show that it is permissible to bring children into the mosque. As for the oft-repeated report, “janibu masajidakum sibyanakum …” (keep your children away from your mosques …), it is weak and, by consensus, cannot be used as evidence. Among those who graded it weak are Ibn al-Jawzi, al-Mundhiri, al-Haythami, the hadith scholar Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, and al-Busiri; ‘Abd al-Haqq al-Ishbili even said, “It has no basis.”
(3) Reported by Imam Ahmad (3/257): ‘Affan narrated to us; Hammad b. Zayd narrated; he said: Ali b. Zayd and Humayd related it from him. ‘Affan added: I also found it elsewhere with the chain Ali b. Zayd, Humayd, and Thabit from Anas b. Malik. The isnad is sound according to the criteria of the two Sahihs, except for Ali b. Zayd, and his report is corroborated. Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Awsat with a similar wording, and in it
