In another version preserved by al-Darimi (1/300–301), al-Bayhaqi (2/96), and Ahmad (4/401, 405) the wording continues only up to the Prophet’s statement: “tilka bi-tilka” (that deed offsets that deed). Abu Dawud and others append the additional phrase: “wa idha qaraʾa fa-ansitu” (and when he recites, listen silently). This addition is sound, and it has already been discussed in its proper place (1). (1) Because they knew the excellence and blessing contained in the two formulas, it is appropriate for you to pronounce them often. This is al-Sindi’s comment. (2) The authenticity of this report is confirmed from several Companions—Aʿisha, the Mother of the Believers; ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbbas; Anas b. Malik; and Muʿadh b. Jabal. As for the hadith of Aʿisha, it is related by Ibn Majah (1/281): Ishaq b. Mansur → ʿAbd al-Samad b. ʿAbd al-Warith → Hammad b. Salama → Suhayl b. Abi Salih → his father → from her. In al-Zawaʾid it is remarked: “Its isnad is sahih and its narrators are trustworthy; Muslim relied on all of them,” and this appraisal is correct. Ibn Khuzaymah likewise declared it sound—see Fath (11/167)—and al-Mundhiri authenticated it in al-Targhib (1/178), citing Ibn Khuzaymah’s Sahih. With the same chain al-Bukhari recorded it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (144). The hadith also has another chain: Ahmad (6/134–135) and al-Bayhaqi (2/56) transmit it through ʿAli b. ʿAsim and Sulayman b.
