So say, “Āmīn”; Allah will answer you (1). (2) And he would also say:
(1) The verb is with the letter jim, i.e. yujibkum, meaning “He will answer your supplication.” This is a strong exhortation to pronounce the amin, so special care should be given to it, as al-Nawawi remarked.
(2) The report comes from Abu Musa al-Ashari who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us, clarified for us our sunnah, and taught us our prayer. He said: ‘When you pray, straighten your rows; then let one of you lead. When he pronounces the takbir, pronounce the takbir. When he recites: ghayri l-maghdubi alayhim wa la d-dallin (not of those who have incurred wrath, nor of those who are astray), say: amin; Allah will answer you. When he pronounces the takbir and bows, pronounce the takbir and bow, for the imam bows before you and rises before you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then said: ‘That deed offsets that deed. When he says: samiʿa llahu liman hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him), say: allahumma rabbana laka l-hamd (O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs the praise); Allah will hear you, for Allah—Majestic is He—said on the tongue of His Prophet ﷺ: samiʿa llahu liman hamidah. When he pronounces the takbir and prostrates, pronounce the takbir and prostrate, for the imam prostrates before you and rises before you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ added: ‘That deed offsets that deed. And when you sit for the tashahhud, let the first words any of you utters be: al-tahiyyatu llahi wa-l-salawat al-tayyibat, al-salam ʿalayka ayyuhā l-nabi wa rahmatu llahi wa barakatuh, al-salam ʿalayna wa ʿala ʿibadi llahi l-salihin, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ʿabduhu wa rasuluh.’”
