(3) This report is from Abu Hurayra, and it exists with several wordings; the author has quoted the version that best fits the present discussion. It reaches us through a number of chains:
First chain: from Sumi, the freedman of Abu Bakr, through Abu Salih al-Saman, from Abu Hurayra.
– Recorded by Malik (1/111), and from him by al-Bukhari (2/212; 8/130 and in his Juz, 20), Abu Dawud (1/148), al-Nasa’i (1/147), al-Bayhaqi (2/55), and Ahmad (2/459) — all of them transmitting from Malik.
– Muslim (2/18) also relates it through Suhayl b. Abi Salih from his father.
– Muslim again (2/20) and Ahmad (2/440) transmit it through al-Aʿmash from Abu Salih with the wording: “He is forgiven who is in the mosque,” a phrase that does not appear in Muslim’s earlier recension.
Second chain: from Maʿmar, through al-Zuhri, through Saʿid b. al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayra; this version contains the additional phrase just mentioned.
– Reported by al-Nasa’i; al-Darimi (1/284); ʿAbd al-Razzaq in his Musannaf (cited in Nasb al-Raya, 1/368); Ibn Hibban in his Sahih via ʿAbd al-Razzaq’s route; and Ahmad (2/270).
– Its isnad is sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
– (Ibn Hajar, in Fath al-Bari, attributes the extra wording to Abu Dawud as well, but this is a slip.)
Al-Bukhari (11/167), al-Nasa’i, al-Bayhaqi, Ahmad (2/238), and Ibn Majah also report it from Ibn ʿUyayna, from al-Zuhri, with the first wording.
Al-Zuhri has yet another transmitter for this hadith, giving a different wording—the second version cited in the present work—and that chain is as follows:
