Saying “Amin” and the imam’s pronouncing it aloud
Then, whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ finished reciting the Opening chapter of the Book (al-Fatiha), he would say, “Amin,” raising his voice and prolonging the word. (1)
(1) A number of hadiths address this point.
First: the report of Waʾil b. Hujr, transmitted through several lines of transmission.
1. Sufyan al-Thawri → Salama b. Kuhayl → Hujr b. Anbas → Waʾil b. Hujr who said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah recited: “wa-laʾ al-dallin” (nor of those who went astray), he would say “Amin,” raising his voice.
This chain is recorded by al-Bukhari in “al-Qiraʾa” (20); Abu Dawud (1/148); al-Tirmidhi (2/27); al-Darimi (1/284); al-Daraqutni (127); al-Bayhaqi (2/57); and Ahmad (4/316), all by way of Sufyan.
Al-Tirmidhi and Ahmad have the wording “and he prolonged it” instead of “and he raised [his voice],” and that is also the version found in al-Bukhari, al-Daraqutni, and al-Bayhaqi.
Al-Tirmidhi graded it “hasan,” as did Ibn Hajar in Takhrij Ahadith al-Kashshaf (3), while al-Daraqutni declared it “sahih.” This judgement is warranted, for all the transmitters are those relied upon by the two Shaykhs, except Hujr b. Anbas—and he is a well-known trustworthy narrator, as Ibn Maʿin affirmed.
Ibn Hajar adds in al-Talkhis (3/348): “Al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, al-Daraqutni, and Ibn Hibban all narrated it through the route of al-Thawri.” He continues: “Its chain is sound; al-Daraqutni authenticated it, whereas Ibn al-Qattan criticized it on the grounds that Hujr b. Anbas is unknown. That is a mistake, for Hujr is a recognized, reliable transmitter—some even say he was a Companion—and Yahya b. Maʿin and others declared him trustworthy.”
