“Indeed each one of you is privately conversing with his Lord; therefore let none of you disturb another, and let no one raise his voice above that of his brother in recitation”—or, he said, “during the prayer.”
It was recorded by Ahmad (3:94) and Abu Dawud (1:209); its chain likewise meets the standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr declared both versions authentic. Al-Nawawi also classed Abu Saʿid’s report as sound in al-Majmuʿ (3:292), and al-Hakim (1:311) judged it authentic according to their criteria, a judgment confirmed by al-Dhahabi.
Ahmad further transmitted a similar wording (2:67, 129) through Muhammad b. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Layla, from a man called Saduaʿ—another copy reads Sadaqa—from Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Haythami notes in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2:265): “It was narrated by Ahmad, al-Bazzar, and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir; the chain contains Muhammad b. Abi Layla, concerning whom there is some discussion.”
Muhammad b. Abi Layla is not the sole transmitter; Ahmad (2:36) also said: “Ibrahim b. Khalid narrated to us—Rabah from Maʿmar—from Sadaqa al-Makki,” with the same report. All the narrators in this isnad are reliable, the only potential flaw being this Sadaqa, whom I could not identify—unless he is Sadaqa b. ʿAmr al-Makki. Al-Dhahabi states in al-Mizan: “He narrated from ʿAtaʾ, and only al-Walid b. Muslim reported from him.” Ibn Ḥajar lists him in al-Taqrib merely for clarification and says—
(*) He is in fact Sadaqa b. Yasar al-Jazari, as shown in Tahdhib al-Kamal (13:155); he is trustworthy and appears among the narrators of Muslim. See Mishkat (1:271) and Sahih Abi Dawud (1:359).
