“so he forbade them to recite behind the imam.” Al-Daraqutni recorded the report (pp. 124, 155), as did al-Bayhaqi, and both declared this wording an error on the part of Hajjaj. Al-Daraqutni said: “Hajjaj is not reliable as evidence.” The hadith is supported by corroborating narrations, among them the report of Abd Allah ibn Masud, who related that the Prophet ﷺ said to a group who were reciting the Quran aloud: “Khalaṭtum ʿalayya al-Quran” (“You have confused the Quran for me”). Al-Bukhari included it in his Juzʾ through the isnad: al-Nadr → Yunus → Abu Ishaq → Abu al-Ahwas → Ibn Masud. Ahmad (1/451) likewise transmitted it— and so did al-Tahawi (1/128)—through Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri: “Yunus ibn Abi Ishaq narrated to us,” with the wording: “They used to recite behind the Prophet ﷺ, whereupon he said, ‘Khalaṭtum ʿalayya al-Quran.’” Al-Haythami quoted this wording in Majmaʿ (2/110) and remarked: “It was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Yaʿla, and al-Bazzar, and the transmitters in Ahmad’s chain are the men of the Sahih”—meaning Sahih Muslim, for all of them are accepted therein.
