Obligation to Recite in the Silent Prayers

As for the silent prayers, the Prophet approved their recitation behind him. Jābir said, “During the noon (ẓuhr) and afternoon (ʿaṣr) prayers we used to recite behind the imam—in the first two rakʿahs the Opening of the Book (Sūrat al-Fātiḥah) along with another sūrah, and in the last two rakʿahs only the Opening of the Book.” (*)

He objected only when their recitation caused confusion. On one occasion he led the noon prayer with his Companions and then said, “Which of you recited, ‘Glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most High’?” A man replied, “I did, and I intended nothing but good by it.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “I realized that someone had entwined it with my recitation.” (1)

(*) See the full documentation on p. 369. (1) This narration is from the hadith of Imran ibn Husayn. It was transmitted by Muslim (2/11–12); Abu Awana; al-Bukhari in his Juzʾ (9, 10, 11, 22); Abu Dawud (1/132); al-Nasai (1/146); al-Daraqutni (155); al-Bayhaqi (2/162); al-Tayalisi (114); and Ahmad (4/226, 431, 441), all through chains going from Qatadah to Zurara ibn Awfa and then to Imran. Qatadah explicitly stated that he heard it from Zurara in a report preserved by Muslim and others; the additional wording belongs to Muslim and al-Nasai. He was also corroborated by Khalid al-Haddaʾ reporting from Zurara, as recorded by Ahmad (4/433). Al-Bukhari, Abu Dawud, al-Daraqutni and others add the following: Shuʿbah said, “I asked Qatadah: ‘Did he seem to dislike it?’ He replied, ‘Had he disliked it, he would have prohibited it.’” This sound addition proves the invalidity of the wording appended by Hajjaj ibn Artaʾ, who reports from Qatadah at the end of the hadith in the form: _________ (*) The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy on him—also attributed it in al-Sifah, the edition published by al-Siraj.
