Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

this naturally leaves one uneasy about Ibn Ujlan’s being the sole transmitter. Even so, Imam Muslim—as will be shown—, Ibn Hazm in al-Muhalla (3/240), Imam Ahmad, Ibn Khuzaymah (cited in Imam al-Kalam, 113) and other leading scholars all declared the report sahih; see the marginal note to Nasb al-Raya (2/15). We confidently hold it to be sound through corroboration, for it is supported by the marfu narration of Abu Musa al-Ashari: “When you stand for prayer, let one of you lead; and when the imam recites, remain silent.” Ahmad (4/415, whose wording is quoted here), Muslim (2/15), Abu Awana (2/133), Ibn Majah (1/279), al-Daraqutni (125) and al-Bayhaqi (2/155) all record it through the chain: Jarir → Sulayman al-Taymi → Qatadah → Abu Ghilab → Hittan b. Abd Allah al-Raqashi → [Abu Musa]. This isnad is sound, and it is also listed in Irwa al-Ghalil (332, 394). Abu Awana (2/133) and Abu Dawud (1/154) likewise transmit it via al-Mu‘tamir b. Sulayman, who said, “I heard my father relate it from Qatadah.” Abu Dawud then objected: “The phrase ‘so listen attentively’ is not preserved; Sulayman al-Taymi alone mentions it in this hadith.” Such a claim is mistaken, for Sufyan al-Thawri corroborates him. After citing the report, al-Daraqutni remarks: “Sufyan al-Thawri also narrated it from Sulayman al-Taymi; and it was transmitted by Hisham al-Dustuwa‘i, Sa‘id, Shu‘bah, Hammam, Abu Awana, Aban and ‘Adi b. Abi ‘Amarah—all from Qatadah—and none of them included the words, ‘and when he recites, remain silent.’ These men are the foremost authorities on Qatadah.” I add: Muslim and others relate the hadith from some of these transmitters through Qatadah in an expanded form, as will be detailed below. (*) So reads the original; the wording appears problematic, as though the scribe’s eye had slipped. Allah knows best.
