of the Messenger of Allah, that the Messenger of Allah said: “Has anyone been reciting with me just now?” They replied, “Yes.” He then said, “I ask you, why am I being disputed with in the Quran?!” After he said that, the people refrained from reciting aloud with him.
This chain is composed of the narrators used by the Six Books, except for Ibn Akhi Ibn Shihab—his name is Muhammad b. Abd Allah b. Muslim al-Zuhri—who has been criticized for weak memory; al-Taqrib describes him as “reliable but prone to mistakes.”
For that reason Yaqub b. Sufyan said: “This is certainly an error. Malik, Muammar, Ibn Uyaynah, al-Layth b. Saad, Yunus b. Yazid, and al-Zubaydi all transmit it from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Ukeymah, from Abu Hurayrah.”
Al-Bazzar likewise—after citing the hadith through this route—commented: “Ibn Akhi Ibn Shihab erred in it,” and he indicated that the correct version is the one reported collectively from al-Zuhri, from Ibn Abi Ukeymah (see Majmaʿ, 2/110).
Be aware that there is disagreement over two points in the hadith. First, the clause “so the people desisted …”: is it Abu Hurayrah’s own statement, as the versions of Malik and Muammar appear to show—one wording explicitly attributes it to him, making it a continuous report? Or is it al-Zuhri’s statement, as in the narrations other than Muammar’s and as al-Awzai explicitly affirms, in which case it is mursal? Or is it Muammar’s statement, as one narration of Abu Dawud suggests?
Abu Dawud said: “I heard Muhammad b. Yahya b. Faris say that the words ‘so the people desisted …’ are al-Zuhri’s.”
