and Ibn Hibban (2/118), al-Tahawi (1/127), and al-Bayhaqi (2/157) also record it, all of them through Malik.
It likewise appears in Ahmad’s Musnad (2/301).
Ahmad further brings it (2/284), as do Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah (1/279), and al-Bayhaqi, by way of Muammar from al-Zuhri, who said: I heard Ibn Ukeymah report it.
In one wording preserved by Abu Dawud, Muammar reports from al-Zuhri that Abu Hurayrah said: “so the people desisted …” and so forth.
The hadith is also transmitted by al-Humaydi (no. 953), Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (2/240) through Sufyan ibn Uyaynah, who said: Al-Zuhri—“I memorised it directly from his mouth”—stated: I heard Ibn Ukeymah relate it to Said ibn al-Musayyib, who said: I heard Abu Hurayrah narrate it, omitting the words “so the people desisted.” Sufyan added: “Al-Zuhri spoke a word that I did not catch.” Muammar explained that the missing word was: “so the people desisted.”
Ahmad also records it (2/285) via Ibn Jurayj and (2/487) via Abd al-Rahman ibn Ishaq, both on the authority of al-Zuhri but without that sentence.
Al-Tahawi and al-Bayhaqi likewise bring it through al-Awzai, who said: Al-Zuhri narrated to me from Said ibn al-Musayyib that he heard Abu Hurayrah say …, and he worded it: Al-Zuhri said: “The Muslims took heed of that and thereafter would not recite.” This is how al-Awzai transmitted it—from Said. Al-Bayhaqi comments: “Al-Awzai preserved the fact that this remark belongs to al-Zuhri and separated it from the hadith, though he did not preserve its isnad. The correct chain is what Ibn Uyaynah related from al-Zuhri: ‘I heard Ibn Ukeymah narrate it to Said ibn al-Musayyib.’ Yunus ibn Yazid al-Ayli said the same.”
A different version is found in Ahmad (5/345), al-Mahamili’s Amali (6/139/1), and al-Bayhaqi through Yaqub—namely Ibn Ibrahim al-Zuhri—who said: Ibn Akhi Ibn Shihab (the nephew of al-Zuhri) narrated to us from his uncle, who said: Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz told me from Abd Allah ibn Buhaynah—who was among the Companions
