Then the Prophet ﷺ forbade them to recite at all during the audible prayers. This took place after he had finished a prayer in which he had recited out loud (another report states that it was the dawn prayer). He asked, “Has anyone just now recited with me?” A man replied, “Yes, I did, O Messenger of Allah.” He said, “I was thinking to myself: why am I being contested? (1)”
[Abu Hurayrah said:] When the people heard this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they stopped reciting along with him in any prayer in which he recited aloud, [while in the prayers where the imam recites quietly they recited to themselves in a low voice] (*) (2).
As for the other schools, the evidence they cite will be presented shortly.
(1) Al-Khattabi said: “Its meaning is: I intrude into the recitation and contend over it. The word munazaʿa may also signify participation and taking turns, as in the expression munazaʿat al-nas fi al-nidam.”
I say: In the present context the latter sense—participation—is more fitting, for they stopped the recitation altogether; had they understood the first sense, they would merely have refrained from intruding.
(*) Both of the foregoing additions are taken from the printed edition of Sifat al-Salat, p. 99.
(2) The report is related by Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Ibn Ukeymah, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah turned away … It is recorded by Malik (1/108); by Muhammad in his recension of the Muwatta (pp. 90–91); by al-Bukhari in his Juzʾ al-Qiraʾa (p. 22); and likewise by Abu Dawud (1/131), al-Nasaʾi (1/146), and al-Tirmidhi.
