and Ibn Hajar (3/312) rules: “Its isnad is hasan.” Ibn Hibban also transmits the report through Ayyub, from Abu Qilaba, from Anas, and he maintains that both chains are reliable. Al-Bayhaqi demurs, stating: “The route of Abu Qilaba from Anas is not preserved.” Nataij adds: “Other scholars have said the same.” The same chain appears in al-Bukhari (22), al-Tahawi (1/128), al-Daraqutni (129), Abu Ya‘la’s Musnad, and—through Abu Ya‘la—in Ibn Hibban’s Sahih, as well as in al-Tabarani’s al-Awsat and in al-Bayhaqi; all of them narrate it via Ubayd Allah ibn ʿAmr al-Raqi from Ayyub. Al-Bayhaqi comments: “Ubayd Allah ibn ʿAmr is the sole transmitter who reports it from Anas; he is trustworthy, yet this wording is only known from Abu Qilaba through Muhammad ibn Abi ʿAʾisha.” Among the corroborating reports is what Ahmad records (5/308): Yazid ibn Harun related to us—Sulayman, meaning al-Taymi, told us—‘I was informed by ʿAbd Allah ibn Abi Qatada, from his father, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Do you recite behind me?” They replied, “Yes.” He said, “Then do not do so, except with the Mother of the Book (Umm al-Kitab, i.e., Surat al-Fatiha).”’ Al-Bayhaqi also reproduces this chain (2/166). All of its transmitters belong to the six canonical collections except for the unidentified narrator who reported to al-Taymi; because he is unknown, al-Bayhaqi rules the sanad mursal.
