and al-Hakim said, “Its chain of transmission is upright.”(1) Ibn Hajar, in Nataij al-Afkar fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Adhkar, after citing the hadith with an uninterrupted isnad that reaches Ahmad and al-Bukhari through Ibn Ishaq, writes: “This is a hasan hadith.” Al-Nawawi concurs in al-Majmuʿ (3/363) and, in Tahdhib al-Asmaʾ (2/180), rules it “sahih.” In Imam al-kalam fima yataʿallaq bi-l-qiraʾa khalf al-imam (p. 189) he adds: “Ibn Khuzaymah also recorded it in his Sahih, and Muhammad ibn Ishaq was not the sole transmitter; he was corroborated by Zayd ibn Waqid, one of the trustworthy narrators of Syria.” I observe, however, that Zayd differs in the chain: he says, “from Mak-hul, from Nafiʿ ibn Mahmud ibn al-Rabiʿ, who heard ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit,” and he does not say “from Mahmud ibn al-Rabiʿ” as Ibn Ishaq does. Al-Bayhaqi comments: “It appears he heard it from both of them.” Al-Daraqutni (121) — and from him al-Bayhaqi (2/165) — transmit it through Muhammad ibn al-Mubarak al-Suri: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated to us; Zayd ibn Waqid narrated from Haram ibn Hakim and Mak-hul, from Nafiʿ ibn Mahmud ibn al-Rabiʿ — thus he said — who heard ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit, with similar wording. Al-Bukhari likewise relates it in his Juzʾ (7) and in Afʿal al-ʿIbad (92), and al-Bayhaqi through the route of Hisham ibn ʿAmmar: Sadaqah ibn Khalid narrated it, and so on. (1) Ibn Hajar states in al-Talkhis (3/311): “It was narrated by Ahmad, by al-Bukhari in Juzʾ al-Qiraʾa — Abu Dawud declared it sahih — as well as by al-Tirmidhi, al-Daraqutni, Ibn Hibban, and others.”
