—“How then do you recite when you stand for prayer?” I recited Fatihat al-Kitab. He replied, “That is it: it is the Seven Oft-Repeated and the Magnificent Quran that I have been granted in addition to everything else.” Al-Hakim remarked, “Sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabi endorsed his judgment; the grading is indeed correct. Yet the transmission from al-Alaʿ b. ʿAbd al-Rahman is disputed: ʿAbd al-Hamid b. Jaʿfar related it in the wording just quoted, whereas ʀ ʾAbd al-ʿAziz b. Muhammad transmitted it (in al-Tirmidhi), ʀ Muhammad b. Jaʿfar b. Abi Kathir al-Madani (in al-Bayhaqi, 2/375-376), ʀ ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Ibrahim (in Ahmad, 2/412-413), ʀ al-Nasaʾi through the route of Ruh b. al-Qasim, and ʀ Ibn Khuzaymah through Hafs b. Maysarah (as cited in Fath, 8/128): all five narrated it from al-Alaʾ, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, that the Prophet ﷺ came out to Ubayy b. Kaʿb … with wording to the same effect. Ismaʿil b. Jaʿfar reported it likewise (Ahmad, 2/357; al-Tahawi, Mushkil, 2/78), as did Jahdam b. ʿAbd Allah. Al-Tirmidhi judged this version stronger, saying: “This is sounder than the report of ʿAbd al-Hamid b. Jaʿfar; several narrators have transmitted it from al-Alaʾ b. ʿAbd al-Rahman in this form.” Shuʿbah also narrated it from al-Alaʾ, from his father, from Ubayy b. Kaʿb in an abbreviated form, recorded by al-Hakim (1/558).
