(3) Route Three: al-Bukhari (no. 9) and Ahmad (2/290) transmit it through Muhammad ibn Amr, from Abd al-Malik ibn al-Mughira ibn Nawfal, from him. This chain is sound.
(4) Route Four: with an unusual wording, related by Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr, from Ataʾ, from Abu Hurayra, raised to the Prophet: “Whoever performs a prescribed prayer behind the imam should recite Fatihat al-Kitab during the imam’s pauses of silence; whoever reaches Umm al-Quran has fulfilled the requirement.” Al-Hakim (1/238) and al-Daraqutni (120) recorded it; al-Daraqutni judged: “Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ubayd is weak.”
The hadith is further corroborated by reports from Abd Allah ibn Amr, Aisha, and Jabir.
1) Report of Ibn Amr: al-Bukhari (no. 3), Ibn Majah (1/278) and Ahmad (2/204, 215) narrate it through several chains from Amr ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather; the isnad is hasan (reliable). Al-Daraqutni (121) also related it through Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Ubayd ibn Umayr, from Amr ibn Shuayb, with the wording: “Whoever performs an obligatory or voluntary prayer should recite in it Umm al-Kitab and another surah; if he limits himself to Umm al-Kitab, that suffices him. Whoever prays behind an imam who recites aloud should recite Fatihat al-Kitab during one of the imam’s silent pauses; if he does not, his prayer is defective and incomplete.” Al-Daraqutni also said:
