And at other times (*), he would recite it as: “mālik yawmi ad-dīn” (1)—Master of the Day of Judgment.
his son’s chain.
I add: One of those additional routes is the report transmitted by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir through Abd al-Samad b. Abd al-Aziz al-Muqri, who said:
“I recited the Quran to Talha b. Sulayman—the brother of Ishaq b. Sulayman—and Talha told me: ‘I recited to al-Fayyad b. Ghazwan.’
Al-Fayyad said: ‘I recited to Talha b. Musarrif al-Yami.’
Talha said: ‘I recited to Yahya b. Wathab; Yahya b. Wathab recited to Alqama b. Qays; Alqama b. Qays recited to Abd Allah b. Masud; and Abd Allah b. Masud recited to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: maaliki yawmi d-din (with an alif), ghayri al-maghdubi alayhim in the genitive case.’”
Al-Tabarani added: “Ali b. Sa id al-Razi narrated to us; Muhammad b. Nabatah al-Razi narrated to us; Abd al-Samad conveyed it.”
This isnad is weak, for I have found no biographical notice for Muhammad b. Nabatah, Abd al-Samad, or Talha b. Sulayman, whereas the remaining narrators are known and reliable.
The reading maliki yawmi d-din is also reported—with a sound chain—by Tamam al-Razi in al-Fawa id, Ibn Abi Dawud in al-Masahif (7/2), Abu Nuaym in Akhbar Isbahan (1/104), and al-Hakim (2/231); al-Dhahabi agreed with him.
Both recitations—maaliki and maliki—are mutawatir.
(*) This text and its marginalia are among the additions found in the author’s autograph that do not appear in the printed edition of al-Sifah.
(1) Abu Dawud recorded it (2/169): Ahmad b. Hanbal told us; Abd al-Razzaq told us; Ma mar related from al-Zuhri—Ma mar said: “and he would sometimes mention Ibn al-Musayyab”—who said: The Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman all recited: maaliki yawmi d-din. The first to recite it as maliki yawmi d-din was Marwan.
