(1) Umm Salamah was asked about the Prophet’s manner of recitation and replied: “He would pause after each verse: bismi-llah al-rahman al-rahim; al-hamdu li-llah rabbi l-ʿalamin; al-rahman al-rahim; maliki yawmi d-din ….” Imam Ahmad records it (6/302) through Yahya b. Saʿid al-Amawi, from Ibn Jurayj, from ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Mulaykah, from her. The same isnad appears in Abu Dawud (2/169)—and, via him, in al-Bayhaqi (2/44)—as well as in al-Tirmidhi (2/152, Bulaq ed.; also al-Shamaʾil, 2/139), al-Darqutni (118), al-Hakim (2/231–232), and Abu ʿAmr al-Dani, al-Muktafa, 5/2 = p. 116, all through Yahya. Al-Sahami (pp. 64–65) transmits it by way of ʿUmar b. Harun from Ibn Jurayj. Al-Darqutni said, “Its chain is sound; all the narrators are trustworthy.” Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi agreed. Ibn Khuzaymah also declared it sahih and placed it in his Sahih (cited in Tafsir Ibn Kathir, 1/17), and al-Nawawi authenticated it in al-Majmuʿ (3/333). This verdict is warranted, despite Ibn Jurayj’s unspecified transmission, because corroborating routes—mentioned below—remove any doubt.
