and this isnad is sound according to the criteria of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Most probably it is the source of Ibn Abi al-Sari’s report from al-Muʿtamir; Ibn Abi al-Sari misunderstood it and inserted the additional words. Allah knows best. Second hadith: Ibn ʿAbbas said, “The Messenger of Allah used to recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim aloud.” Al-Hakim (1/208) recorded it through ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmr b. Hissan—Sharik—Salim—Saʿid b. Jubayr—from him, and ruled: “It is sahih and free of any defect.” Al-Dhahabi objected: “So the author claims! Yet several scholars branded Ibn Hissan a liar, and such a fact should not have escaped him.” Ibn Hajar comments in al-Talkhis (3/323): “Al-Hakim declared it sound, but he erred; Ibn al-Madini accused ʿAbd Allah of fabricating hadith, and Abu al-Salt al-Harawi—who is unreliable—stole it and reported it from ʿAbbad b. al-ʿAwwam from Sharik.” Al-Daraqutni (no. 114) also narrated it, and in al-Diraya (73) he states: “Its original version is mursal, though its transmitters are trustworthy.” Ishaq transmitted it from Yahya b. Adam—from Sharik—from Salim al-Aftas—from Saʿid b. Jubayr, who said: “The Messenger of Allah used to recite Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim aloud, drawing out his voice with it, and the polytheists would mock him; so Allah revealed: ‘Do not raise your voice in your prayer’ (Q 17:110).” Al-Daraqutni and al-Tabarani in al-Awsat likewise recorded it through Yahya b. Talha al-Yarbui—from ʿAbbad b. al-ʿAwwam—from Sharik, with a connected isnad, in the wording:
