I add: This is a mistake—or a mere slip of the pen on his part—for the hadith of Anas transmitted by al-Daraqutni concerns only the opening supplication that begins, “Subhanaka…,” and contains no mention at all of seeking refuge. Al-Daraqutni reports it through this same Husayn, who said: “Muhammad b. al-Salt narrated to us…,” up to Anas, and he placed it under the heading of the opening supplication. We have already quoted Abu Hatim’s judgment that the chain is weak, and there is in fact no second chain, contrary to what the Hafiz claimed. No one is safeguarded from error except those whom Allah protects.
5. As for the report of Abu Umamah, Imam Ahmad (5/253) recorded it through Hammad b. Salamah and Sharik, both from Ya‘la b. ‘Ata, who said that he heard an unnamed shaykh from Damascus relate that he heard Abu Umamah al-Bahili say:
“When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commenced the night prayer, he would pronounce takbir three times, say subhan Allah three times, say la ilaha illa Allah three times, and then declare:
‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the accursed Satan—from his hamz, his nafkh, and his shirk.’ Sharik narrated it with the wording: ‘and his nafth’ instead of ‘and his shirk.’”
The chain is sound except for the Damascene shaykh, who is unknown and unnamed.
Taken together, these various routes establish the legitimacy of seeking refuge from these three satanic acts, while the additional phrase “the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing” is likewise confirmed in the hadith of Abu Sa‘id with a hasan chain, as previously noted; it is therefore recommended to include it on occasion. Ahmad expressed this view in Masail Ibn Hanbal related by Ibn Hani (1/51).
As for restricting oneself to the formula “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan,” we have found no hadith that supports it—apart from what Abu Dawud records in his Marasil from al-Hasan, who reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek refuge saying: “I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.”
