Saʿd ibn ʿUbaydah reports it from al-Mustawrid ibn al-Ahnaf, from Silah ibn Zufar, from Hudhayfah with similar wording, though with some additions and omissions. Muslim records this (2/186), as do others—see below under “Recitation in the Night Prayer.”
Silah ibn Zufar was an ʿAbsi and a highly reliable transmitter accepted by both Bukhari and Muslim, as noted in Taqrib.
Consequently, the chain is sound according to Bukhari’s criterion: all of its narrators are used by the two Shaykhs except Abu Hamzah—whose name is Talhah ibn Yazid—but he too is trustworthy, though cited only by Bukhari.
The hadith is also transmitted by al-ʿAlaʾ ibn al-Musayyab from ʿAmr ibn Murrah, from Talhah ibn Yazid al-Ansari, from Hudhayfah, who said: “I came to the Prophet one night in Ramadan while he was praying; when he pronounced the takbir he said, ‘Allah is Most Great, Possessor of dominion …’ ” and so on.
Imam Ahmad (5/400) records it through Khallaf ibn al-Walid → Yahya ibn Zakariyya → al-ʿAlaʾ, omitting the ʿAbsi narrator from the chain.
Al-Darimi (1/347), Ibn Majah (1/290), and al-Hakim (1/271) likewise transmit it through various routes from al-ʿAlaʾ, but they confine the text to the supplication said between the two prostrations. Al-Hakim commented, “It is sahih according to the criteria of both,” and al-Dhahabi agreed.
Both were mistaken: Talhah is not among Muslim’s narrators, nor did he hear this report directly from Hudhayfah. Al-Nasai (1/246) preserves a fuller version and then remarks, “In my judgment this hadith is mursal; I do not know that Talhah ibn Yazid ever heard anything from Hudhayfah. Other than al-ʿAlaʾ ibn al-Musayyab, the narrators of this report say: from Talhah, from a man, from Hudhayfah”—alluding to Shubah’s transmission from ʿAmr ibn Murrah.
