12- “Allah is Most Great [three times], Possessor of Dominion and Might, of Majesty and Grandeur.”
(12) This narration comes from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman .
He relates that he once prayed the night prayer with the Prophet ﷺ. When the Prophet pronounced the opening takbir he said:
“Allah is Most Great, Possessor of dominion, irresistible power, majesty, and greatness.”
He then recited Surah al-Baqara.
Next he bowed, and his bowing was as long as his standing. While bowing he kept saying:
“Subhana rabbi al-azim, subhana rabbi al-azim (Glory be to my Lord the Magnificent).”
When he raised his head he stood for a span equal to his bowing and said:
“Indeed, praise belongs to my Lord.”
Then he prostrated, and his prostration lasted as long as his standing. In sujud he said:
“Subhana rabbi al-a‘la (Glory be to my Lord the Most High).”
On rising from prostration he said, between the two prostrations:
“Lord, forgive me, [Lord, forgive me].”* He sat between the two prostrations for a duration equal to his prostration.
Hudhayfah adds: The Prophet prayed four rak‘ahs in which he recited al-Baqara, Al-Imran, al-Nisa, and al-Ma’ida—or al-An‘am; Shubah was uncertain about the last surah.
It is recorded by al-Tayalisi (p. 56): he said, “Shubah narrated to us, reporting from ‘Amr ibn Murrah, who heard Abu Hamzah relate—from a man of the tribe of ‘Abs (Shubah believed him to be Silah ibn Zufar)—from Hudhayfah.”
Through this route it is also transmitted by al-Bayhaqi (2/121-122).
Likewise it is reported by Abu Dawud (1/139-140), al-Nasai (1/172), al-Tahawi in Sharh Mushkil al-Athar (1/308), and Ahmad (5/398) through several chains from Shubah.
Ibn Nasr (no. 45) records only the opening formula, while the additional wording cited above is found in Abu Dawud.
Shubah’s view that the unnamed transmitter was Silah ibn Zufar is strengthened by the fact that the hadith is also narrated
* The words in brackets were omitted in the manuscript of Shaykh al-Albani and have been restored from al-Tayalisi.
