8- “All praise is due to Allah—praise that is plentiful, pure, and blessed.” Another man began his prayer with these words, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(8) Anas ibn Malik narrated: A man arrived, entered the row while gasping for breath and said, “Allahu akbar. Praise be to Allah—abundant, pure, and blessed praise.” When the Messenger of Allah finished the prayer he asked, “Which of you spoke these words?” The congregation kept silent. He repeated, “Which of you uttered them? He has done nothing wrong.” A man replied, “I came in short of breath, so I said them.” The Prophet then said, “Indeed I saw …” —and the remainder of the report follows.
Muslim transmitted the hadith (2/99), as did Abu Awana (2/99). The additional wording appears in the versions of Abu Dawud (1/122) and al-Nasaʾi (1/143), all through the chain of Hammad b. Salama → Qatada, Thabit, and Humayd → Anas. Al-Tayalisi (no. 268) also relates it via Hammam → Qatada → Anas, with a further addition.
The phrase hafazahu al-nafas (with open ha, fa, and zay) means he was exhausted and out of breath from hurrying to the prayer; the root hafz conveys forceful pushing—al-Nihaya defines it as “urging and hastening.”
The verb fa-aramma (with an unpointed ra and a doubled mim) means “they fell silent.”
Ahmad likewise records the hadith (3/106, 252) with an extra detail, and the same applies to another version in Abu Dawud and Abu Awana.
