and in the evening (1); one of the Companions began his prayer with it, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “I am amazed by it! The gates of heaven have been opened for it.”
(8) Anas ibn Malik reported: “While we were standing in rows behind the Messenger of Allah, a man arrived, joined the row and said aloud, ‘Allahu akbar kabiran (Allah is supremely great), subhana-Allah bukratan wa asilan (glory be to Allah, morning and evening).’ The worshippers lifted their heads in surprise and said, ‘Who is raising his voice above that of the Messenger of Allah?’ When the Messenger of Allah finished the prayer he asked, ‘Who was that loud-voiced man?’ They replied, ‘This one, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘By Allah, I saw your words ascend to heaven until a gate was opened and they entered.’
Ahmad recorded it in the Musnad (4:355–356), and his son ʿAbd Allah in the Zawaʾid, through ʿUbayd Allah b. Iyad b. Laqit → Iyad → ʿAbd Allah b. Saʿid → [Anas]. All the transmitters are found in Muslim’s collection except ʿAbd Allah b. Saʿid. Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, and Bukhari and Ibn Abi Hatim mention him without criticism; however, no one besides this Iyad narrates from him, so he remains majhul (of unknown status). Al-Haythami states in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/106): “It is narrated by Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir; its narrators are trustworthy.” A version directly attributed to the Prophet also exists, but its chain contains an unknown narrator; it will be discussed under the section on istiʿadha (seeking refuge).
(1) The phrase ‘morning and evening’ refers to the beginning and end of the day, times when the angels of the night and of the day meet, as noted by al-Abhari and the author of al-Mafatih. Al-Tibi, however, maintains that the expression intends continual praise, similar to the verse, “And for them therein is their provision, morning and evening” (Q 19:62), as cited in al-Mirqat.
