I say: This isnad is sound, God willing, for all of its transmitters are trustworthy and well-known except Zakariyya b. Yahya—his nickname is Zahmuwiyy. A number of scholars narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban declared him reliable, as recorded in Taʿjil al-Manfaʿa. The man who reports from him here, Mahmud b. Muhammad al-Wasiti, is given a biography by al-Khatib in Tarikh (13/94–95); he names several people who transmitted from him, notes that he died in 307 AH, and records neither criticism nor explicit praise. Al-Hafiz says in al-Diraya (p. 70): “This is a good corroboration of Abu Khalid’s narration.” 4. As for the hadith of Jabir: al-Bayhaqi (2/35) related it through Ibrahim b. Yaʿqub al-Juzajani, who said: ʿAbd al-Salam b. Muhammad al-Himsi narrated to us; Bishr b. Shuʿayb b. Abi Hamza narrated to us; his father reported to him; Muhammad b. al-Munkadir informed him; Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began the prayer he would say …—he quoted the wording and added, “I have turned my face …” up to the phrase “He has no partner.” Al-Bayhaqi then transmitted it through another route from al-Juzajani: Abu Ishaq narrated it to us with the same content. This version yields a valuable point: the kunyah of ʿAbd al-Salam b. Muhammad al-Himsi is Abu Ishaq—a detail omitted by all who biographed him. Al-Bayhaqi also said: “It was narrated by ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAmir al-Aslami—who is weak—from Muhammad b. al-Munkadir, from Ibn ʿUmar.” I say: al-Tabarani cited it in al-Kabir through the route of Muʿafa b. ʿImran from him, up to the words, “and I am of the Muslims.” Nasb al-Rayah (1/319) quotes al-Bayhaqi in Maʿrifah as saying: “The two wordings have also been combined and transmitted from Muhammad b. al-Munkadir once via …”
