(I hope it is not worthy of being discarded.) (3) As for the hadith of Anas: al-Daraqutni likewise recorded it through the route of Muhammad b. al-Salt, who said: Abu Khalid al-Ahmar narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began the prayer he would pronounce the takbir, then raise his hands until the tips of his thumbs were level with his ears, and would then say …,” and he mentioned the rest. Al-Zaylaʿi (1/320), after attributing the report to al-Daraqutni, states: “All of the transmitters in its isnad are trustworthy.” This sentence is not found in the printed copy available to us; Allah knows best. Al-Haythami, in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/107), assigns it to al-Tabarani in al-Awsat and comments: “Its narrators have been declared reliable.” I say: Ibn Abi Hatim, however, records in al-ʿIlal (1/135): “I heard my father mention a hadith that Muhammad b. al-Salt related from Abu Khalid al-Ahmar …”—he then cited it and added: “My father said, ‘This hadith is fabricated; it has no basis. As for Muhammad b. al-Salt, he is acceptable; I have written from him.’” The report nevertheless has two chains of transmission, one of them superior to the other. Al-Tabarani also narrated it in his separate book on supplication—a small volume, as al-Zaylaʿi notes—saying: “Mahmud b. Muhammad al-Wasiti narrated to us; Zakariyya b. Yahya, nicknamed Zahmuwiyy, narrated to us; al-Fadl b. Musa al-Sinani—Nasb al-Rayah reads ‘al-Shaybani,’ which is a copyist’s error—from Humayd al-Tawil, from Anas, who said: ‘When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commenced the prayer he would say …,’ and he mentioned it.”
