5- Glory be to You, O Allah!
(Note) In treating this section and the one before it as two distinct categories I have followed Sunan al-Nasa’i. Although one might argue that the narration ultimately goes back to a single hadith—namely, the report of Ali—and that some Companions heard only part of what Ali transmitted while missing the rest, this possibility runs counter to the evident meaning and therefore does not overturn it.
5 – A group of Companions related this supplication as a marfuʿ report from the Prophet ﷺ, among them: Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, ʿAʾisha, Anas, and Jabir.
1 – The version of Abu Saʿid: It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/124), al-Nasa’i (1/143), al-Tirmidhi (2/9–10), al-Darimi (1/282), Ibn Majah (1/268), al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Maʿani (1/116), al-Daraqutni (p. 112), al-Bayhaqi (2/34–35), and Ahmad (3/50) through the chain: Jaʿfar b. Sulayman al-Dubaʿi → ʿAli b. ʿAli al-Rifaʿi → Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji → Abu Saʿid, who said:
“Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rose for the night prayer he pronounced the takbir and then said: ‘Subhanaka …’ etc. He would then say three times: ‘La ilaha illa Allah,’ followed by three times: ‘Allahu akbar kabiran. I seek refuge with Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, from Satan the accursed— from his whispering, his spitting, and his blowing.’ He would then begin to recite.”
This wording belongs to Abu Dawud and al-Tahawi.
Its chain is hasan; all of its transmitters are found in Muslim except ʿAli b. ʿAli al-Rifaʿi, of whom al-Taqrib says:
..........................................................
