4- The same wording applies—again—up to his statement, “and I am the first of the Muslims,” with the following addition:
“O Allah! Guide me to the finest character and the best of deeds; none guides to the finest of them but You. And protect me from vile character and evil deeds; none protects from their evil but You.”
He reports that when the Messenger of Allah would stand to perform a voluntary prayer he said: “Allahu akbar. Wajjahtu wajhi…,” and so on.
This chain is sound: all of its transmitters are those found in al-Bukhari except for Yahya b. ‘Uthman al-Himsi, whom al-Nasa’i and others declared reliable. Al-Taqrib describes him as “truthful and devout (saduq, ‘abid).” The report is also recorded by Abu ‘Awana in his Sahih, as cited by Shaykh Ibrahim al-Halabi in Sharh Munyat al-Musalli, p. 303.
4 – Another recension comes from Jabir — may Allah be pleased with him. He said: When the Prophet began the prayer he would pronounce the takbir and then say: “inna salati …,” etc.
Al-Nasa’i (1 / 141) and al-Daraqutni (p. 112) relate it through the route of Shurayh b. Yazid al-Hadrami → Shu‘ayb b. Abi Hamza → Muhammad b. al-Munkadir → Jabir.
The chain is sound: its narrators are those employed by the Six Books except Shurayh, whom Ibn Hibban declared trustworthy, and a number of reliable scholars transmitted from him. Al-Daraqutni adds: “Shu‘ayb said: Muhammad b. al-Munkadir and other jurists of Madina told me, ‘If you recite this supplication yourself, then add: wa-ana mina-l-muslimin (and I am among the Muslims).’”
This additional wording is likewise found in Abu Dawud, as noted above, and his chain is the same as al-Nasa’i’s. Shurayh b. Yazid also has corroborating transmitters for this hadith, as will be shown in the narration that follows.
