Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

(Note) Al-Shawkani (2/161) writes: “Muslim limits it to the night prayer and adds the wording: from the middle of the night.” Al-Hafiz says the same in Bulugh al-Maram (1/231): “In a version reported by Muslim, this occurred during the night prayer,” and Fath (2/183) repeats it. I have found no such report in Sahih Muslim, nor in any other chain of transmission. What does appear is a version restricting it to a voluntary prayer in the narration of Muhammad b. Salamah recorded by al-Nasa’i, as will be mentioned [under the third type]. As for the phrase “middle of the night” cited by al-Shawkani, it belongs to a different hadith of Ibn Abbas in Muslim (2/184). Because he had quoted that hadith immediately beforehand, al-Shawkani seems to have been misled into thinking the phrase belonged to the hadith of Ali. Allah knows best. That hadith of Ibn Abbas is supplication no. (9) below. The same hadith was also transmitted by al-Shafi‘i on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for prayer and pronounced the takbir he would say…—mentioning only the opening declaration (tawajjuh). Its chain runs: Ibrahim b. Muhammad — Safwan b. Sulaym — ‘Ata’ b. Yasar — Abu Hurayrah. All the narrators are those of the six canonical books except Ibrahim, who is weak. There is corroboration from the hadith of Abu Rafi‘, the Prophet’s freedman, who said: A document containing the opening supplication of the Messenger of Allah was handed to me: when he pronounced the takbir he would say…—wording similar to the report of Abu Hurayrah.
