"It is sound and fair (hasan sahih)."
Al-Nasa’i also recorded the hadith (1/142, 161, 169), reproducing it in full but in separate sections, omitting the supplication after the taslim and the remembrance after the bowing.
Al-Darimi (1/282, 301) cited from it only the opening supplication and the post-ruku remembrance, and al-Tahawi did the same (1/117, 140).
Abu ‘Awanah (2/102–103), al-Daraqutni (p. 112) and al-Bayhaqi transmitted it through the chain Hajjaj ibn Muhammad → Ibn Jurayj → Musa ibn ‘Uqbah → ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Fadl → ‘Abd al-Rahman al-A‘raj, with the wording: “When he began an obligatory prayer he said …,” then related the hadith in full.
Al-Shafi‘i likewise included it in al-Umm (1/91), reporting—on the authority of Muslim ibn Khalid, ‘Abd al-Majid and others from Ibn Jurayj—the text minus the remembrances for ruku‘ and thereafter. This isnad is sound according to Muslim’s criterion. In that version al-Shafi‘i remarked: “Most narrators add: ‘wa-ana awwalu l-muslimin (and I am the first of the Muslims).’ Ibn Abi Rafi‘ said: I was uncertain whether someone had said: ‘wa-ana min al-muslimin (and I am among the Muslims).’ ”
Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi also transmitted it through ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Zinad → Musa ibn ‘Uqbah under the wording: “When he stood for an obligatory prayer …,” and in it: “He would say, when opening the prayer after the takbir: ‘Wajjhatu wajhi …’ ” Al-Tirmidhi judged it “sound and fair (hasan sahih).”
