Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

distance me from my sins (1) just as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, purify me (2) of my sins as a white garment is purified of defilement. O Allah, wash me of my sins with water, snow, and hail (3).” He used to say this in the obligatory prayer, and it is the soundest of the opening supplications in terms of chain of transmission (4).

These are firmly established, multiply-attested sunnahs from the Prophet ﷺ. It seems that they either never reached Imam Malik—may Allah have mercy on him—or that they did reach him but he left them for reasons of his own. As for you, O follower of the Maliki school, do not let partisanship for your madhhab keep you from adopting them, for in your case there is absolutely no excuse. (1) That is: “between deeds which, were you to perform them, would become sins; the request therefore is for protection and the grace to refrain.” Or: “between the sins you have already committed; the request is for forgiveness.” Such petitions from the Prophet ﷺ are an expression of servitude and the exaltation of divine lordship; otherwise—given his infallibility—his past and future sins have already been forgiven. (2) With the consonant doubled; i.e., “purify me from them in the most complete and emphatic manner.” (3) With the first ra’ opened: barad (hailstones), meaning “by every kind of purifier.” The intent is the forgiveness of sins and their covering with various forms of mercy and kindness. It has been said that because sins lead to the Fire of Hell they are treated analogously, so in erasing them one invokes the coolants used to extinguish fire. This was noted by al-Sindi. (4) Ibn Hajar mentions this in Fath al-Bari 2/183, having been preceded by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah in his treatise Tanawwuʿ al-ʿIbadat (p. 85); Ibn Taymiyyah writes (p. 87): “Nevertheless, the great majority of scholars—among the Companions and those after them—recommend opening the prayer with other supplications as well, and most of them prefer beginning with the words: ‘Subhanaka Allahumma…’. The reason for this is that …”
