Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

Opening Supplications

Next, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would begin the recitation with many varied opening invocations in which he praised, glorified, and extolled Allah. He instructed the man who had prayed incorrectly to do the same, saying to him, “No one’s prayer is complete until he pronounces the takbīr, praises Allah—majestic and exalted—glorifies Him, and recites whatever is easy for him from the Quran…” (1)

He would sometimes recite one version and at other times another, saying:

  1. “O Allah! .................................................................”
(1) Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Hakim, who graded it sound; al-Dhahabi concurred. (It was previously cited on p. 189.) 1. Abu Hurayrah narrated: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ uttered the opening takbir in the prayer, he would fall silent for a brief moment before reciting. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, may my father and mother be ransomed for you, what do you say during your silence between the takbir and the recitation?’ He replied, ‘I say …,’ and he mentioned the supplication.” The hadith is recorded by al-Bukhari (2/182), Muslim (2/98) – and through his route by Ibn Hazm (4/96) – Abu Dawud (1/125), al-Nasa’i (1/21, 142), Ibn Majah (1/269), Ibn Abi Shaybah (12/110/2 = 6/27/29199), and Ahmad (2/231). The expression “sakata hunayya” (he paused a hunayya) — with damma on the h, fathah on the n, and shaddah on the y — means “a very short span of time”; it is the diminutive of hana, and may also appear as hunayhiyah. Al-Sindi explains: “The ‘silence’ refers to not reciting the Quran aloud so that the people hear; absolute silence would contradict the question ‘What do you say during it?’” Ibn Hazm in al-Muhalla and al-Shafi‘i regarded beginning the prayer with this supplication as prescribed.
