He ﷺ once prayed in a khamīṣah (1) that had decorative markings. He glanced at its patterns, and when he finished he said:
“Take this khamīṣah to Abū Jahm and bring me the anbijāniyyah (2) of Abū Jahm, for it has just distracted me from my prayer. (In another wording: ‘I looked at its design while praying and it nearly led me astray.’)”
ʿĀʾishah owned a cloth bearing images that was stretched over a small alcove (3). The Prophet ﷺ used to pray facing it, until he said:
“Move it away from me, for its images keep presenting themselves to me during the prayer.” (4)
He would also say:
“No prayer is proper when food is present, nor while one is resisting the call of the two filths (urine and feces).” (5)
(1) A cloak of khazz (a silk-wool blend) or a striped woolen garment.
(2) A heavy cloak with no decorative stripe.
(*) Agreed upon; the full documentation appeared on p. 170.
(3) A small room slightly sunken into the ground, resembling a side-chamber or storage closet (al-Nihaya).
(4) Reported by al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Awana. The Prophet ﷺ did not order the images to be removed or destroyed; he was satisfied with having them set aside because—Allah knows best—they did not depict beings endowed with souls. This is supported by his tearing down other images, as related in several narrations in the two Sahihs. For a detailed discussion, see Fath al-Bari 10/321 and Ghayat al-Maram fi Takhrij Ahadith al-Halal wa-l-Haram, pp. 131–145.
