and he used to forbid raising one’s gaze toward the sky, reinforcing the ban so emphatically that he declared, “People must stop lifting their eyes toward the sky while praying, or their sight will not be returned to them—in another narration: or their eyesight will most certainly be snatched away.” (1)
(1) Related by Muslim (2/29); Abu Dawud (1/144); Ibn Majah (1/333); al-Bayhaqi (2/283); Ahmad (5/90, 93, 101, 108); and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, all through various chains from al-Aʿmash, from al-Musayyib, from Tamim b. Tarafah, from Jabir b. Samurah, as a marfuʿ report.
Abu Dawud also transmits it via Jarir from al-Aʿmash with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the mosque and saw some people praying with their eyes raised toward the sky, whereupon he said …” and so forth. This chain is sound.
Al-Darimi (1/298) narrates it through ʿAli b. Mushir—“al-Aʿmash told us …”—with similar wording.
Another version, from Anas, states that the Prophet ﷺ said: “What is the matter with people who lift their gaze to the sky during their prayer?” He spoke so sternly about it that he finally declared: “Let them desist, or their sight will be snatched away.” Reported by al-Bukhari (2/180); Abu Dawud; al-Nasaʾi (1/177); likewise Ibn Majah, al-Darimi, al-Bayhaqi, al-Tayalisi (270), and Ahmad (3/109, 112, 115, 116, 140, 258) through the chain of Qatadah from Anas.
There is also a report from Ibn ʿUmar: “Do not lift your eyes toward the sky lest they be taken away,” i.e., while in prayer.
