Twelve Companions of the Messenger of Allah narrated the description of the Prophet’s prayer—his standing, bowing and prostration—in a form resembling the prayer of the Commander of the Believers, meaning ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAziz. Sulayman added: “I kept my eye on ʿUmar while he prayed, and his gaze was fixed on the place of his prostration …” and he related the rest of the report. Al-Bayhaqi comments: “It is not strong.” I say: its flaw is this Sadaqa, namely Abu Muʿawiya al-Samin; al-Taqrib rates him “weak.” I further say: the report is supported and reinforced by the hadith of ʿAʾisha, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah entered the Kaʿba, his gaze did not leave the place of his prostration until he exited.” Al-Hakim recorded it (1/479) and, after him, al-Bayhaqi (5/158). Al-Hakim declared it “sound according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi concurred—and that judgment is correct. Al-Bayhaqi also brought the report (2/284) through al-Rabiʿ ibn Badr—defective—from ʿUntuwana, from al-Hasan, from Anas: the Messenger of Allah said, “O Anas, keep your gaze where you prostrate.” Al-Bayhaqi noted: “Al-Rabiʿ ibn Badr is weak.” Al-ʿAqili transmitted it through the same chain and remarked: “He is discarded, and ʿUntuwana is unknown; his hadith is not preserved.” Nevertheless, Shaykh ʿAli al-Qari states in al-Mirqat (2/37):
