and this is the explanation adopted by Abu Dawud in his Sunan, and likewise by al-Tirmidhi. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar comments: “This is the interpretation most widely known.”
Al-Bayhaqi also recorded the hadith through the route of Ibn Khuzaymah: ‘Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Mughira al-Misri narrated to us; Abu Salih al-Harrani narrated to us; ‘Isa ibn Yunus from Hisham, from Ibn Sirin—marfu‘—with the wording: “*Ikhtisar* is the relaxation of the inhabitants of Hell-fire.”
Al-Hafiz al-‘Iraqi judged this chain outwardly sound, as quoted by al-Shawkani (2/283). I add: all of its transmitters are reliable men also found in al-Bukhari’s collection, apart from ‘Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman—whose full name is ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Mughira and whose nickname is ‘Allan (with a doubled lām); he too is trustworthy, as stated in al-Taqrib. Abu Salih al-Harrani’s personal name is ‘Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Dawud ibn Mihran.
Yet al-Dhahabi remarks in his Abridgement of Sunan al-Bayhaqi: “This wording is munkar; a number of reliable memorizers have transmitted the report from Hisham— as mentioned above—only with the wording of prohibition, without this extra phrase.”
Al-Mundhiri (al-Targhib, 1/193) attributes the same wording to Ibn Khuzaymah and Ibn Hibban in their Sahihs. Al-Haythami (Majma‘, 2/85) traces it to al-Tabarani in al-Awsat and notes: “In its chain is ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Azwar; al-Azdi declared him weak, citing this very hadith as evidence.”
I add: Ibn al-Azwar is the one who related it from Hisham ibn Hassan in this form, as recorded in al-Mizan, which also calls it “a munkar report.”
