The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to place his right hand upon his left hand and then bind the two together on his chest while standing in prayer. This isnad is a good mursal chain; all its transmitters are rated trustworthy, and it ought to be accepted as evidence by everyone. Although technically mursal, it is supported by fully connected chains from other routes, as already noted. It is corroborated by the report of Hammad ibn Salamah: “ʿAsim al-Jahdari narrated to us, from his father, from ʿUqbah ibn Suhban, who said: ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) commented on the verse, ‘fa­salli li-Rabbika wanhar’ (So pray to your Lord and sacrifice): he placed his right hand on the middle of his left hand and then placed them on his chest.” Al-Bayhaqi recorded it (2/30). All the narrators are reliable except ʿAsim’s father—al-ʿAjjaj al-Basri—for I found no one who mentioned him. Ibn Kathir remarked in his Tafsir, “It is not authentic from ʿAli.” Al-Bayhaqi also transmitted a similar narration from Ibn ʿAbbas, and its chain can reasonably be graded hasan. Another support for ʿAli’s report is what Abu Dawud (1/120) recorded through Abu Talut ʿAbd al-Salam, from Ibn Jarir al-Dabbi, from his father, who said: “I saw ʿAli (may Allah be pleased with him) clasping his left hand with his right on the wrist, above the navel.” Al-Bayhaqi (2/30) graded this isnad hasan.
