and Ibn Hibban lists him in al-Thiqat and declares his report authentic, as al-Dhahabi notes in al-Mizan. In Taqrib he is graded: “maqbul” (acceptable). Accordingly, his narration is judged hasan (reliable) when used as corroboration. Sufyan al-Thawri also transmitted it from Simak with the wording: “placing his right hand on his left.” It was recorded by al-Daraqutni (no. 107), al-Bayhaqi (2/29), and appears in one of Ahmad’s versions. Sharik transmitted it as well, and one variant from Sufyan reads: “on his chest, above the wrist joint”—to be cited below. Further support comes from what al-Daraqutni (no. 106) narrated through Mandil, from Ibn Abi Layla, from al-Qasim ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abd Allah ibn Masud: that the Prophet ﷺ would take his left hand with his right during the prayer. This chain, however, contains weakness and an unknown narrator. Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir likewise report from Shaddad ibn Shurhabil who said: “I never forgot—and shall never forget—that I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing with his right hand over his left, grasping it,” meaning in prayer. Al-Haythami remarks: “In the chain is Abbas ibn Yunus, and I found no biographical entry for him.” Another supporting report is what al-Daraqutni and others transmit from Talhah, from Ata, from Ibn Abbas in a marfu narration: “We—the community of prophets—have been commanded …” etc., which contains:
