Muslim (2/13), al-Bayhaqi (2/28, 71), and Ahmad (4/317) likewise record the report through Hammam, who said: “Muhammad b. Juhadah narrated it to us from him.” ʿAbd al-Warith b. Saʿid relates it from Ibn Juhadah with the wording akhadha (“he took”), which has the same sense as qabd (grasping); this version is found in Abu Dawud (1/115). Hajar Abu al-ʿAnbas said: “I heard ʿAlqamah b. Waʾil transmit it from Waʾil—and I myself heard directly from Waʾil—with the wording reported by Hammam.” Al-Tayalisi (no. 138) preserves this: Shuʿbah narrated to us, saying, “Salamah b. Kuhayl informed me from him” with that wording. Ahmad (4/316) also cites it, adding: “or Hajar may have heard it from Waʾil himself.” Ahmad further records it (4/318) through Zuhayr—Abu Ishaq—ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil—from Waʾil, who said: “I saw the Messenger of Allah place his right hand upon the left in prayer, close to the wrist …” He also transmits it (4/316) through al-Masʿudi from ʿAbd al-Jabbar: “My household informed me from my father with the wording yadhaʿ (‘he placed’).” This wording is supported by the hadith of Zaaʾidah from ʿAsim b. Kulaib, from his father, from Waʾil: “He placed his right hand on the back of his left palm, the wrist, and the forearm …,” cited a little earlier. Ahmad (4/319) likewise reports it via Shuʿbah from ʿAsim with the wording: “He placed his right hand on the left,” and al-Thawri follows ʿAsim in al-Bayhaqi (2/30).
