Al-Bukhari likewise cites the report in his monograph Rafʿ al-Yadayn (no. 6) through Abu Nuʿaym; both he and al-Nasai transmit it from Musa b. ʿUmayr al-Anbari—al-Nasai adds: “and Qays b. Sulaym al-Anbari”—who said: “ʿAlqamah b. Waʾil related it to us from his father.”
In al-Nasai’s chain all the transmitters are those used by Muslim, yet ʿAlqamah is not known to have heard directly from his father; al-Taqrib, following Ibn Maʿin, therefore rules: “The narration of ʿAlqamah b. Waʾil from his father is mursal (missing the Companion).” I have, however, found him explicitly declaring that he heard it from his father in Sunan al-Nasai (1/161) with a sound isnad, and the same occurs in al-Bukhari’s Rafʿ al-Yadayn (pp. 6–7).
Ahmad (4/316) and al-Daraqutni (p. 107) record it through Wakiʿ, who said: “Musa b. ʿUmayr al-Anbari narrated it to us,” with the wording: “placing his right hand on his left.”
Ibn Abi Shaybah also transmits it through Wakiʿ with the added phrase “below the navel,” as in ʿUmdat al-Riʿayah (1/135); in my view, this addition is anomalous.
The distinction between qabd (grasping) and wadʿ (placing) is obvious: the former is more specific—everyone who grasps is also placing, but not every placer is grasping.
Both wordings are independently transmitted from Waʾil; in my judgment this reflects differences among the narrators. By way of illustration, ʿAbd al-Jabbar b. Waʾil related it from ʿAlqamah b. Waʾil and from a family servant, saying that both narrated it from his father Waʾil with the wording: “he placed.”
