and “He passed by a man while the man was praying, having placed his left hand over his right; so he pulled it away and placed the right over the left.” (1)
who is reliable (thiqa). Abu al-Shaykh Ibn Hayan states in Tabaqat al-Asbahaniyin:
“Abbas b. Muhammad b. Mujashi‘, kunya Abu al-Fadl, related from Muhammad b. Abi Yaqub al-Kirmani nearly the whole of the Musnad from the latter’s original copy; he is a trustworthy shaykh.”
Likewise, Lisan al-Mizan records:
“He narrated from Muhammad b. Abi Yaqub al-Kirmani, and Ibrahim b. Muhammad al-Qumasi narrated from him. Ibn al-Qattan said: ‘He is unknown; his report occurs in the (Hajj) section of Sunan al-Daraqutni.’
I say: he was corroborated by Ahmad b. Muhammad al-Azraq, as al-Bayhaqi transmits through his chain.”
Ibn al-Qattan’s judgment that he is “unknown” reflects only the limits of what reached him; Abu al-Shaykh, who was from the same town, declared him reliable—and the inhabitant of a house knows best what it contains.
Al-Maqdisi also recorded the hadith through this very line of transmission.
The report has further supporting chains: al-Tabarani cited it in al-Saghir (p. 55) and in al-Awsat, and al-Bayhaqi (2/29) from Ibn Umar; al-Aqili (while grading it weak), al-Daraqutni, and Ibn Abd al-Barr narrated it from Abu Hurayrah; and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir from Ya‘la b. Murrah and from Abu al-Darda. Although each isnad is individually weak, together they strengthen one another.
(1) Imam Ahmad also recorded it (3/381): “Muhammad b. al-Hasan al-Wasiti—i.e. al-Muzani—reported to us; Abu Yusuf al-Hajjaj—i.e. Ibn Abi Zaynab al-Saiqal—reported to us from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir who said …,” and he mentioned the hadith.
