pronounced the takbir. One version adds: “while they were still in that position.”
It is reported by Muslim (2/6–7); al-Bukhari in Rafʿ al-yadayn (16); Abu Dawud (1/114); al-Nasaʾi (1/140); al-Daraqutni (p. 108); and al-Bayhaqi (2/26, 69) through several chains from al-Zuhri, from Salim, from Ibn ʿUmar. The additional phrase is found only in Abu Dawud, though its sense is preserved in al-Daraqutni. The chain is sound—or at least hasan, as al-Nawawi states in al-Majmuʿ (3/308).
It also has corroborating reports. Among them is the narration of Abu Humayd al-Saʿidi, in the presence of ten Companions, which reads: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood for prayer he would raise his hands until they were level with his shoulders, then pronounce the takbir …” The full text will be cited, God willing, under “Raising the Hands at Bowing.”
This report is recorded by Abu Dawud (1/116); al-Tirmidhi (2/105–106); al-Darimi (1/313); Ibn Majah (1/213); al-Tahawi (1/131); and al-Bayhaqi (2/24, 72, 127) through the chain of ʿAbd al-Hamid b. Jaʿfar—who said that Muhammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAtaʾ told him he had heard Abu Humayd, together with ten of the Prophet’s Companions, relate it.
It also appears in the Musnad (5/424), but without the words “then he would pronounce the takbir.” The same omission occurs in most manuscripts of al-Tirmidhi, though one manuscript matches the common wording. Al-Zaylaʿi likewise quotes it from al-Tirmidhi (1/311) with the wording: “Then he said, ‘Allahu Akbar.’ ”
Placing the takbir after the hand-raise is one established view in the Shafiʿi school and an opinion reported within the Hanafi school; as stated in
