Raising the Hands
and he would sometimes raise his hands together with the takbir (1),
(1) It is reported from Abd Allah b. Umar: “I saw the Prophet ﷺ open the prayer with the takbir; while saying the takbir he raised his hands until they were level with his shoulders. He did the same when he pronounced the takbir for rukua, and when he said: samiʿa Allahu liman ḥamidah (Allah hears whoever praises Him) he again raised them and said: Rabbana, wa-laka al-ḥamd (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise). He did not raise them when lifting his head from sujud.”
Al-Bukhari recorded it in his Sahih (2/176) and in the tract Rafʿ al-Yadayn (14); al-Nasai (1/140) and al-Bayhaqi (2/26) also transmitted it, all through Shuayb b. Abi Hamza al-Qurashi—Muhammad b. Muslim b. Ubayd Allah b. Shihab al-Zuhri—who said: “Salim b. Abd Allah related it to me.”
Al-Darqutni (108) and Ahmad (2/147) give it through Maʿmar from al-Zuhri, and al-Tahawi (1/115, 131) through Jabir al-Juʿfi from Salim.
Another route: Ahmad (2/132) transmits it via Ismail b. Ayyash—Salih b. Kaysan—Abd al-Rahman al-Aʿraj—from Abu Hurayra, and also from Salih b. Kaysan—Nafiʿ—from Ibn Umar: “The Prophet ﷺ used to raise his hands to shoulder level when pronouncing the takbir to open the prayer, when bowing, and when prostrating.” Al-Darqutni (111) records the same sense.
Ibn Majah (1/282), al-Bukhari in Rafʿ al-Yadayn (15), al-Tahawi (1/132), and al-Khatib (7/394) narrate only the Abu Hurayra line with Ahmad’s wording. That chain is weak.
